A new Story

William Philip Meisel was the son of Gay Powell Burruss and Albin Luther Meisel, Sr. Phil attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Virginia where he was affectionately called "Thumper" by his close friends and family. After graduating from high school he attended Virginia Military Institute and was a graduate of the class of 1966. In the VMI Year Book of 1966 Phil was described as follows: "When Richmond sent one of her finest sons to VMI in September of 1962, it did quite a favor for the Class of '66. In four years, Phil has not changed from the nice guy who walked through Jackson Arch. When you were feeling low, you talked to Phil. If he couldn't cheer you up, it was time to go to the hospital. As an upperclassman, the rats felt secure when "Thumper" was near, for he never let one be mistreated. His home was always open to weary Cadets after A Richmond Club party, and you could always be assured of a hearty welcome." Phil continued to be the same caring, loving man for the remainder of his life...always there to help, always had a smile, always knowing the right things to say, always offering encouragement, always happy. He loved life and lived every day to its fullest. Phil entered the United States Army as an officer after graduation from VMI. After serving his duty to his country, he chose a career in the electronics semi-conductor business and retired from Intel Corporation. Phil is survived by his wife Betty; three sons, William Philip Meisel, Jr. of Portland, OR; Rod Meisel of Seattle, WA; Russ Meisel of Ft. Worth, TX; five grandchildren, Leslie and Lisa Meisel of San Antonio, TX; Jason Meisel of Dallas, TX; Ava and Riley Meisel of Portland, OR; brother Albin Meisel of Richmond, VA and two great-grandchildren. Phil is predeceased by sons Forrest Ashley and Michael Oliver Meisel. Services are pending. Phil will receive a full military funeral at Willamette National Cemetery. Few Brother Rats of the Class of '66 will forget the boy who would go out of his way to lend a helping hand.
